LIGHTNING WRESTLING RELEASE 2023-2024 WRESTLING SCHEDULE

The Appleton North wrestling team has released their schedule for the 2023-24 season. The schedule has few changes from last season, but the Lightning will replace the Wausau East Invite with the Muskego Duals. The team is excited for the change and looks forward to the team competition.

In addition to the full FVA schdule the Lightning will compete in a very competitive tournament schedule. Varsity tournaments this season will include the Papermaker Invite, Battle on the Bay, Mid State Classic, Irish Invitation, Muskego Duals, and FVA Conference Tournament. JV tournaments include the Papermaker JV Invite, Shawano JV Invite, WWCA Challenge Series, Freedom JV Duals, Weyauwega-Fremont JV Invite, and the FVA JV tournament.

The Lightning will open their season on Thursday, November 30th at home versus Oshkosh North and Fond du lac. Competition will begin at 6:00 pm

LIGHTNING OPEN SEASON WITH 2 FVA WINS

The Appleton North wrestling team finally hit the mats to officially begin the 2023-24 competitive season. The team opened with two Fox Valley Association wins. They began with a 67-9 victory over Oshkosh North and followed with a 63-18 win over Fond du Lac.

The Lightning opened the dual against Oshkosh North with 4 pins in the first 5 matches and never let up throughout the remaining matches. In all, the Appleton North wrestlers racked up 7 pins on their way to a 66-9 win over Oshkosh North.

The second dual of the evening started a bit slower for the team, but they quickly gained momentum and never looked back. They recorded 6 pins on their way to a 63-18 win over Fond Du Lac.

The Lightning JV wrestlers looked good as well winning both of their duals!

STOFFEL, WALT AND ESSER REACH PODIUM

The Appleton North wrestling team competed in the Papermaker Invite this past Saturday. Jake Stoffel, Addison Walt, and Jax Esser all finished in the top 3. Stoffel dominated the competition on his way to a tournament championship. Walt lost a nailbitter in the finals and Esser rebounded nicely after a difficult semi-final loss. All 17 Lightning wrestlers contributed to the seventh team place finish.

LIGHTNING DROPS DUAL TO NEENAH

In an anticipated FVA wrestling showdown, the Neenah Rockets gained momentum early over the Appleton North Lightning and continued to build on that lead. In the end, the Rockets prevailed 51-21 over the Lightning.

Despite the overall,, team defeat, the Appleton North wrestling squad showcased their toughness in several weight classes, securing impressive victories that left the Lightning faithful cheering and applauding.

Jake Stoffel, Cam Chudacoff, Brock Arndt, and Jax Esser all tallied up impressive wins. Stoffel demonstrated his prowess on the mat and wasted no time, swiftly pinning his opponent in just 47 seconds. Chudacoff demonstrated some grit as he moved up a weight class and earned the team a decision with his 5-1 victory. Arndt asserted his dominance with a decisive victory Neenah's heavyweight. He secured a fall in the second periord, showcasing both strength and technique in the match. Esser put on a relentless pace over his counterpart and earned a fall in the second period.

The team will get ready for another big FVA showdown next week versus Kimberly. Before that though, the Lightning team will compete in one of the states best early season tournaments, The Battle on the Bay.

STOFFEL CAPTURES BATTLE OF BAY TITLE; ARNDT RUNNER-UP

The 2023 Battle on the Bay wrestling tournament, one of Wisconsin's premier high school wrestling events, lived up to its reputation as it showcased intense competition among state-ranked teams and individually acclaimed wrestlers. Appleton North High School's wrestling team demonstrated their prowess throughout the tournament, leaving a lasting impression on the mats.

Appleton North secured the 12th position in the team standings, with a total score of 226.0 points. The tournament featured formidable opponents, including Luxemburg-Casco, Bay Port, and Mukwonago, who claimed the top three spots respectively.

Jake Stoffel, ranked #1 in Wisconsin and #16 nationally at 175 pounds, dominated the field resulting in his first ever Battle on the Bay title. Stoffel, earned 4 technical falls on the day to cruise to the title. He defeated Brookfield East's Johnny Bosch, ranked #5, 16-1 in the championship match.

Brock Arndt, ranked #2 in Wisconsin, reached his third consecutive Battle on the Bay championship match. He would not earn another title as he fell to West Bend West's Cole Mirasola. Mirasola, a Penn State recruit is ranked #1 in the state and #4 nationally. Arndt was tested in the semi-finals against the states third ranked wrestler Grant Stromberg of Mukwonago. He prevailed with a 8-3 decision.

Jackson Esser, who has an honorable mention ranking at 120 pounds, finished in 7th place. He answered an early tournament test, in the second round, when he faced state qualifier Dylan Boel of Pewaukee. Esser came out firing and secured a first period fall. He would fall in the next round to the top seed Brady Collins of East Troy.

THRILLING SHOWDOWN AGAINST KIMBERLY

In a heart-pounding wrestling showdown between Appleton North and Kimberly in the Fox Valley Association, the mat warriors left fans on the edge of their seats as the battle unfolded with intense back-and-forth action. The atmosphere was electric as the two teams battled back and forth throughout the dual.

The clash began at 165 pound weight class, where Tanner Hart of Kimberly secured a pin over Pablo Salinas. Despite the setback, Appleton North responded fiercely, with Jake Stoffel at 190 pounds delivering a quick victory by fall over Brody Beck in just 1:55, earning crucial points for the team

The seesaw continued as the 215-pound weight class witnessed a stellar performance by Cameron Chudacoff from Appleton North, who triumphed over Jack Argall with a 9-4 decision. Momentum swung once again as Brock Arndt secured a rapid victory with a fall at 1:03 in the 285-pound class, keeping the excitement alive for Appleton North supporters.

LIGHTNING DROP DUAL TO GHOSTS

The Appleton North wrestling team celebrated Parent's Night in the final home dual before Christmas Break. Once again, the Lightning parents impressed with a wonderful showing of support in a difficult lost to the defending state champions, Kaukauna Ghosts.

The Lightning claimed just two victories in the dual. Jake Stoffel won a decision 5-3 and Brock Arndt earned a second period fall.

The Lightning will enjoy a short Christmas break before returning to the mats the second half of the season. The Lightning will compete next Fri-Sat at the Mid-States tournament at UW-Whitewater.

LIGHTNING TAKE ON MID-STATES; STOFFEL CAPTURES TITLE AND O.W.

The Appleton North Lightning wrestling team took on all challenges presented to them this past weekend at the annual Mid-States Classic at UW-Whitewater. The 43 team tournament features teams from Illinois and Wisconsin. The Lightning finished in 15th place and were led by senior Jake Stoffel.

Stoffel, with an impressive 20-0 record, earned his third consecutive Mid-States title. While all were unique challenges, this title was likely the most difficult due the extraordinary finals opponent. He displayed his prowess on the mat throughout the tournament. Stoffel's journey to the championship included a commanding tech fall victory over Joah Doyle from Sussex Hamilton in the second round and a decisive fall over Owen Morgan from Cedar Grove-Belgium in the quarterfinal.

In the semifinal, he would win by medical forfeit over Cayden Brandenburg from Janesville Parker. The pinnacle of Stoffel's success came in the 1st Place Match, where he emerged victorious in the ultimate tie-breaker against Matthew Jens from Grayslake Central, securing the championship with a thrilling UTB score of 3-2. Jens is a returning state champ in Illinois and currently ranked #1 in the state. The victory over Jens propelled him to be voted Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Braden Lewis, competing in the 138-pound pounds, displayed resilience and skill. Despite losing in the first round, Lewis battled through several rounds, securing wins by fall and decision, ultimately placing 8th.

Tyson Salm, wrestling at 144 lbs, also showed some grit as he bounced back from a second round defeat to reach the second day of competition. Salm finished in 10th place in a very difficult weight class.

Cooper Krysiak and Ezra Bowman-Barnes were the final two Lightning wrestlers to reach day 2 of competition. Krysiak, unfortunately, needed to medically forfeit his matches as he sustained an injury during day 1 of competition. Bowman-Barnes, who was knocked out of competition early last year, fought vigorously throughout the tournament and claimed a 12th place finish.

LIGHTNING SPLIT AT FVA DOUBLE DUALS

The Appleton North wrestlers were eager to hit the mats after a week off of competition. The Lightning traveled to Fond du lac for the annual FVA Double Duals. They faced Appleton East and Oshkosh West.

The Lightning split the pair of duals, beating Appleton East 70-12 and losing to Oshkosh West 45-28. The North wrestlers took full control of the dual versus East and dominated the action. The Lightning were back and forth with the Wildcats, but lost a few toss up matches in the end.

SENIOR NIGHT!

The Appleton North wrestling hit the mats against Appleton West in their final home dual of the season. It was a fun filled night as the Appleton North wrestling community not only celebrated the little wrestlers form our Lightning wrestling club, but they also recognized the CLASS of 2024.

This years squad has seven seniors and five of them were in action against the terrors. Brock Arndt, Cam Chudacoff, Max Ekins, Tyson Salm, and Jake Stoffel all earned one last home victory. Blake Miller and Emily Verhyen were not able to wrestle in the dual.

ARNDT REACHES MILESTONE WITH 100th CAREER WIN; LIGHTNING COMPETE AT INAUGURAL WARRIOR DUALS

In the world of high school wrestling, achievements are earned through dedication, skill, and sheer determination. One such remarkable athlete, Brock Arndt, recently reached a significant milestone by securing his 100th career win for the Appleton North Lightning. This accomplishment places him among an elite group of wrestlers from Appleton North who have also achieved this impressive feat.

Brock Arndt's journey to his 100th career high school wrestling win was marked by a combination of talent and hard work. He now stands alongside ten other past and present wrestlers from Appleton North High School who have achieved the coveted 100-win milestone. This achievement is a testament to Arndt's commitment to the sport and his ability to consistently perform at a high level.

In addition to reaching this outstanding milestone, he also had an impressive day at the inaugural Warrior duals at Muskego High School. He finished the day 5-0 which included a 15-0 technical fall over #4 ranked heavyweight in the state. Several other Lightning wrestlers had impressive days at the tournament. Jake Stoffel continued his dominating ways with a 5-0 record on the day. Jax Esser recored 4 pins on the day and lost just one match. Complete results of the Warrior duals can be found here.

LIGHTNING DROP DUAL TO POLAR BEARS

The Appleton North Lightning wrestling team hit the mats in Hortonville on Thursday for their final dual of the season. The Lightning came out strong and were able to build a small 24-21 lead, but the Polar Bears proved to be too much as they took all remaining matches.

Securing wins for the Lightning were Cooper Krysiak, Tomas Thao, Jake Stoffel, and Brock Arndt.

LIGHTNING CAPTURE 3 FVA TITLES

The 2024 Fox Valley Association (FVA) Conference Championships witnessed intense competition, and Appleton North's wrestling team demonstrated a strong performance in one of the state's toughest wrestling conferences. The Lightning finished in 5th place as a team and had several strong performances throughout the line-up.

Leading the way for the Lightning were Jake Stoffel, Brock Arndt, and Paige Sisongkham as they captured individual conference titles. Stoffel completed a career sweep as he captured his 4th FVA title. He finished his FVA career undefeated! Arndt captured his 3rd consecutive FVA title and dominated the field. He pinned all opponents in the 1st period demonstrating his dominance. Sisongkham captured her 1st title in the inaugural girls FVA Championship.

Blake Miller returned to the Lightning line-up for the first time this season. He worked out a few kinks early and finished with a strong performance, finishing with a 3rd place finish.

LIGHTNING ADVANCE 6 TO SECTIONALS

Wrestlers from around the state of Wisconsin began their quest to earn a trip to the WIAA State Wrestling Championship. Six Appleton North wrestlers still have their eye on the prize as they advanced out of today's Regional tournament and will compete next weekend at Regionals.

Three Lightning wrestlers reached today's finals and the team crowned two champions. Jake Stoffel and Brock Arndt both captured individual titles. Blake Miller fell short in the finals by a score of 2-4. Also advancing for the Lightning were Jayden Rasumussen, Tomas Thao, and Jax Esser.

LIGHTNING SENDING 3 TO STATE

The Appleton North wrestling team hit the mats on Saturday at the WIAA State Wrestling Sectional hosted by Kimberly High school. The top 2 individuals in each weight class qualify for the state tournament in Madison. Three Lightning wrestlers were able to punch their ticket to the tournament.

Returning state champion, Jake Stoffel, continued his winning ways in dominant fashion. He began his day with a quick first period pin over his opponent from Pulaski. In his semi-final match, he only needed 51 seconds to secure the pin. In the finals, he faced Kaukauna's Brady Sprangers once again. He won with a 10-3 victory.

Blake Miller earned his first trip to the state tournament. He came out of the gates hot and secured an opening round fall as well as a fall in the semi-finals. In the finals, he built a lead but failed to hang on for the victory. The loss meant he needed to compete in the wrestleback round....win and go to state scenario! Blake got an early takedown and immediately hit a cradle and pinned his opponent.

Brock Arndt, returning state runner-up, had no problems on Saturday despite battling severe illness all week long. Arndt captured 3 pins on the day and will make his third state appearance.

Also wrestling for the Lightning were Jayden Rasmussent, Tyson Salm, Paige Sisongkham, and Emily Verhyen.
